Abstract
Compds. of general formula (I) R1, R2, and R3 = same or different H or lower alkyl, not more than one = H or R1 + R2 or R2 + R3 = alkylene (pref. pentamethylene) while the 3rd substit. (R1 or R3) = H. R4 = H, Hal, NO2, or PhCH2 opt. subst. as is the other O - benzyl residue. R5 = H or OH X = Hal. Y = H or Hal. Bacteriostats with greater activity and lower toxicity than phenol and p-cresol. p-Chlorobenzyl chloride (40 g.) 4-s-butylphenol (45 g.), ZnCl2 (18 g.), and CHCl3 (200 ml.) were refluxed 21 hr., mixed with H2O (200 ml.), sepd., the H2O extd. with CH2Cl2 (2 x 20 ml.), the combined CHCl3 soln. washed with H2O (4 x 25 ml.), dried, evapd., and distilled, giving (I), b.p. 160-178 deg./0.5 mm, m.p. 57 deg. (from pet. spirit).
