Abstract
An electrode-free fluorescent tube system 10 is described, where electromagnetic energy with a spectrum within the ultraviolet range is converted to energy within the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum by exciting coatings 20 with fluorescent compositions. The fluorescent tube system 10 comprises an exciter mechanism 12 which generates an enclosed magnetic field, an induced electrical field and an electrical radiation field, where the induced electrical field is essentially parallel to and in the same direction as the magnetic field. Both the magnetic field and the induced electrical field operate at essentially the same frequency in order to accelerate electrons and cause them to collide with atoms in a gas composition which is enclosed in a gas container 14, particularly in the centre 16 of this. An electrostatic shield 26 surrounds essentially the exciter mechanism 12 and encloses the electrical field within the fluorescent tube system 10. The electrostatic shield 26 and the exciter mechanism 12 are surrounded by the globe 22 of the lamp. The atoms in the gas composition which are ionized in the centre 16 of the gas container as a result of collision with the accelerated electrons emit ultraviolet radiation which passes through the essentially transparent exciter mechanism 12 and the electrostatic shield 26, and strikes against the coating 20 which then emits electromagnetic radiation within the visible band of the electromagnetic spectrum. <IMAGE>
