Abstract

A method for the manufacture of paper containing clay or other mineral filler, according to which the filler is first thoroughly mixed with some, for example 20%, of a pulp, preferably of a mechanical pulp, which has a high fine material content, that is to say fibrils and lamellae, which have been peeled off the fibre walls. After mixing, the mixture is continuously precipitated with a polymer, for example polyacryl amide, as a result of which voluminous flakes of fine material including filler particles are formed. This flocculated suspension is then pumped continuously into the stock upstream of the paper machine. The results of laboratory experiments and trials with experimental paper machines are presented in order to demonstrate that the method gives the paper improved formation, a more uniform filler distribution in the z-direction, reduced air permeability, increased rigidity, enhanced light diffusion capacity and greater opacity. The consumption of retention agent does not exceed the consumption in normal flocculation of the filler, when it is in the stock.
