Abstract
The present invention relates to a process for converting biomass, comprising the stages where, in the first stage starting material comprising biomass is subjected to pyrolysis under pyrolysis conditions to yield pyrolysis oil, in the second stage the pyrolysis oil is subjected to non-catalytic high pressure high temperature treatment, followed by separation of an aqueous phase and HTHP treated pyrolysis oil, and in the third stage the HTHP treated pyrolysis oil is subjected to hydroprocessing in the presence of at least one hydroprocessing catalyst and hydrogen, whereby an effluent comprising one or more hydrocarbons boiling in the liquid fuel hydrocarbon range is obtained. The invention also relates to hydrocarbon components useful as transportation fuel or as a blending component in transportation fuel, obtainable by said process.
