Description
LOAD UNIT ARRANGEMENT FOR CONNECTING AND DISCONNECTING
LOAD UNITS OF THE LOAD UNIT ARRANGEMENT
TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The invention relates to a load unit arrangement having first and second load units to be carried by a vehicle, such as by a truck. In particularly the invention relates to a load unit arrangement, where the first and second load units can be moved in relation to each other and connected to and disconnected from each other.
20185456 prh 04-04-2019
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
It is known to transport a skip or interchangeable load unit by a vehicle, such as a truck, unload or remove the load unit off the vehicle and then load another load unit to the vehicle. It is also known to transport a load system having first and second load units connected to each other, so loaded them on the top of each other.
WO 2017182719 A2 discloses an example of an interchanging arrangement for interchanging a first and second load units carried by a vehicle, which comprises a landing device. The landing device is arranged between a first end of the first load unit and a second end of the second load unit so that a first portion of said landing device is supported to the first end of the first load unit and a second portion of said landing device is supported to the second end of the second load unit. The landing device is configured to move said first end of said first load unit into the lower lever than the second end of the second load unit after said first end of the first load unit has met said second end of the second load unit.
DE 3922809 A1 discloses another example of a loading and unloading system for vehicles, which have their own lifting gear for handling sea containers. In order to lift the container to the height of the loading surface hydraulic supports are provided at the lower comers of the container face with the doors. The system enables a co-ordinated movement of the lifting arm at the opposite plain face.
DE 3431561 A1 discloses still another example of a utility vehicle with a lifting frame which serves to receive an interchangeable body (container) and is arranged so that it can be lifted and/or tilted with respect to the frame of the vehicle, and to a slider frame which can be displaced in the longitudinal 5 direction with respect to a lower carrier frame. Also a sliding ramp is formed and it has a hydraulic lifting frame, provided with a drive device, for setting down, sliding over and picking up the body. The lifting frame is a gantry-like travel frame which moves on rollers in lateral guide rails of the slider frame.
However, the problem there is to disconnect the load units, so to take the io upper load unit away from the top of the bottom load unit and lowering the upper load unit to the ground in an easy and controlled way. In addition, the problem is also to connect the load units, so to take the upper load unit to the top of the bottom load unit by lifting it from the ground in an easy and controlled way. Moreover, the problem is to keep the ends of the load units in 15 a certain distance from each other during the lowering or lifting so that the ends of the load units would not get tangled up with each other and in addition to ensure, that the upper load unit does not slide in an uncontrolled manner during the disconnecting.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
An object of the invention is to alleviate and eliminate the problems relating to the known prior art. Especially the object of the invention is to provide an arrangement and method for connecting and disconnecting the load units, so to take the upper load unit to the top of the bottom load unit by lifting the upper 25 load from the ground or vice versa to take the upper load unit away from the top of the bottom load unit and lowering the upper load unit to the ground in an easy and controlled way.
The object of the invention can be achieved by the features of independent claims.
The invention relates to an arrangement for connecting and disconnecting at least two load units according to claim 1.
According to an embodiment of the invention a load unit arrangement is provided, where the load unit arrangement comprises at least first and second
20185456 prh 04-04-2019 load units to be carried by a vehicle, such as by a truck. Both the load units have first and second ends so the front ends and the rear ends. The load units are configured to move in relation to each other in a first longitudinal direction to disconnect the load units and in a second opposite direction to 5 connect the load units. Advantageously the second load unit is located on the top of the first load unit and for disconnecting the load units the second load unit is moved in said first longitudinal direction, until the first end of the second load unit is lowered in the direction, so for example to the ground. The separated or disconnected load units can also be connected together so that io the second load unit, which locates for example on the ground, is first lifted up (or its first end is first lifted up) and then moved to the second opposite direction to connect the load units so that after connection the second load unit locates on the top of the first load unit.
According to an embodiment the first load unit (e.g. the bottom load unit) 15 comprises a guiding rail having a longitudinal axis along which the second load unit is configured to move in said first and second directions. The guiding rail can comprise e.g. a groove or slot, the longitudinal axis of which extends essentially in said first longitudinal direction, especially when said load units locates on the top of each other. The moving of the first and second load units 20 can be achieved for example by known methods, such as a chain, strap, belt or cable. Also a traditional hook system or any other possible implementation can be used, which for example tilts the load units and the gravity is used for dragging the second upper load unit downwards.
The load unit arrangement comprises also a landing device, which is 25 configured to move the first end of said second load unit in a direction being in an angle to the longitudinal axis of the guiding rail, when the first (front) end of the second (upper) load unit has met the second (rear) end of the first (bottom) load unit. The landing device can be used for lowering the first end of the second load unit into a lower level during disconnecting the load units, 30 but also for lifting the first end of the second load unit into an upper level during connecting the load units. The landing device moves, in a practice, the first end of the second load unit in a direction, which either is essentially vertical or at least comprises a vertical component.
According to an embodiment the arrangement comprises also a protruding 35 member and an elongated channel having a longitudinal axis. The elongated channel comprises advantageously a groove or slot, and the protruding
20185456 prh 04-04-2019 member is advantageously a pin or a wheel, for example. The protruding member and the elongated channel are advantageously arranged to the load units so that one of the protruding member and an elongated channel is arranged at the second end of said first load unit and another of the protruding 5 member and an elongated channel is arranged in the first end of the second load unit.
In addition the elongated channel comprises advantageously a first opening in its first end (such as in the lower end) for receiving the protruding member when the first end of the second load unit is introduced (both first and second io directions) to the second end of said first load unit (both for connecting and disconnecting said load units). In addition the elongated channel comprises advantageously a second opening in its second end (= upper end) for releasing the protruding member when the first end of the second load unit is separated or diverged from the second end of the first load unit (and vice 15 versa when the load units are connected together). In addition the elongated channel is configured to receive said protruding member to travel between the first and second openings of the elongated channel, when the first end of the second load unit is either lifter or lowered.
Advantageously the elongated channel together with the protruding member 20 is configured to guide or limit the movement of the first end of the second load unit in at least one direction being essentially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the elongated channel, when said landing device moves, so lowers or lifts, the first end of said second load unit. In this way the free movement of the second load unit can be limited advantageously in the lateral and/or 25 longitudinal directions, whereupon also the distance between the first end of the second load unit and the second end of the first load unit can be mechanically controlled and kept in a desired range during lowering and/or lifting the first end of the second load unit. In addition, if the elongated channel together with the protruding member are configured properly (e.g. big or tight 30 enough with no looseness) or the load units have at least two elongated channels and protruding member (e.g. a one couple of elongated channel and protruding member in both lateral sides of the load units), the second load unit can also be kept horizontally level during lowering and/or lifting the first end of the second load unit.
Still in addition the elongated channel may also comprise a catching member next to the first and/or second opening to catch the protruding member when
20185456 prh 04-04-2019 the first and second load units moves in relation to each other and thereby stop the relative movement in the first or second longitudinal directions. In addition the catching member is advantageously used to introduce the protruding member to the elongated channel. It is to be noted that this is the 5 case both when connecting or disconnecting the load units. The catching member may be implemented e.g. by a lip or curved portion, which prevents the protruding member to move over the catching member in the first or second longitudinal directions and guides the protruding member to the elongated channel.
io According to embodiment of the invention the landing device can be implemented in different ways. Advantageously the landing device comprises first and second portions. According to a first example the first portion of the landing device is supported to the first end of the second load unit, and the second portion is introduced with the first load unit, advantageously to the 15 upper edge portion of the first load unit. Advantageously the second portion is a free portion and it is introduced with the first load unit when the protruding member is received to the elongated channel, after which the first end of the second load unit can be either lifter or lowered via the movement of the second portion of the landing device. According to a second example the first 20 portion of the landing device is supported to the second end of the first load unit. In this case the second portion of the landing device is introduced with the second load unit, and advantageously to the lower edge portion of the second load unit, after which the first end of the second load unit can be either lifter or lowered via the movement of the second portion of the landing device.
The present invention offers advantages over the known prior art, such as enables very easy, fast and safe arrangement for connecting and disconnecting the load units, so to take the upper load unit to the top of the bottom load unit by lifting the upper load from the ground or vice versa to take the upper load unit away from the top of the bottom load unit and lowering the 30 upper load unit to the ground in a controlled way so that the upper load unit is secured to the bottom load unit during the operation. In addition the invention enables to keep the ends of the load units in a suitable distance from each other during lowering or lifting the front end of the second load unit and thereby making it possible to prevent for example any stacking of the 35 ends of the load units during lowering or lifting to each other. Further the invention increases safety, namely according to the embodiments of the invention and especially with the elongated channel and the protruding member is can be ensured that the upper load unit cannot slide in an uncontrolled manner from the top of the bottom load unit especially in the first direction, but also on a lateral direction being perpendicular to the first 5 direction.
The exemplary embodiments presented in this text are not to be interpreted to pose limitations to the applicability of the appended claims. The verb to comprise is used in this text as an open limitation that does not exclude the existence of also unrecited features. The features recited in depending claims io are mutually freely combinable unless otherwise explicitly stated.
The novel features which are considered as characteristic of the invention are set forth in particular in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, both as to its construction and its method of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will be best understood from the following 15 description of specific example embodiments when read in connection with the accompanying drawings.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Figures 1A-1D illustrate a principle of an exemplary load unit arrangement io 100 for connecting and disconnecting first and second load units 101, 102 carried by a vehicle 103 according to an advantageous embodiment of the invention. Both the load units have first and second ends 101A, 101B, 102A, 102B so the front ends and the rear ends. The load units 101, 102 are configured to move in relation to each other in a first longitudinal direction 113 15 to disconnect the load units and in a second opposite direction 114 to connect the load units. Advantageously the second load unit 102 is located on the top of the first load unit 101 and for disconnecting the load units the second load unit 102 is moved in said first longitudinal direction 113, until the first end 102A of the second load 102 unit is lowered in the direction 107, so for 20 example to the ground. The separated or disconnected load units 101, 102 can also be connected together so that the second load unit 102, which locates for example on the ground, is first lifted up (or its first end 102A is first lifted up) and then moved to the second opposite direction 114 to connect the load units 101, 102 so that after connection the second load unit 102 locates 25 on the top of the first load unit 101. The lifting or lowering is done by a landing device 104 illustrated for example in Figures 2A-2G and Figure 6.
Figures 2A-2G illustrate an exemplary landing device 104 for moving the first end 102A of the second load unit 102 up and down. The first load unit 101 advantageously comprises a guiding rail 106 having a longitudinal axis 105 along which the second load unit 102 is configured to move in said first and second directions 113, 114. The moving of the first and second load units 101, 102 can be achieved for example by known methods, such as by a traditional hook system 117.
20185456 prh 04-04-2019
The landing device 104 advantageously moves the first end 102A of said second load unit 102 in the direction 107, which is in an angle to the longitudinal axis 105 of the guiding rail 106, when the first (front) end 102A of the second (upper) load unit 102 has met the second (rear) end 101B of the 5 first (bottom) load unit 101. The landing device 104 can be used for lowering the first end 102A of the second load unit 102 into a lower level during disconnecting the load units, but also for lifting the first end 102A of the second load unit 102 into an upper level during connecting the load units. The landing device 104 moves, in a practice, the first end 102A of the second load io unit 102 in a direction 107, which either is essentially vertical or at least comprises a vertical component.
According to an example illustrated in Figures 2A-2G the landing device 104 comprises an arm, which has first and second portions 104A, 104B (e.g. ends). The landing device is advantageously hinged 112 via the first portion 15 104A to the to the first end 102A of the second load unit 102 (as shown in
Figured), but alternatively can be hinged also to the second end 101B of the first load unit 101. In addition the landing device 104 advantageously comprises an operation device 115, such as a cylinder, the actuation of which is controllable. The movement of the second portion 104B of the arm can be 20 controlled by the operation device 115 and thereby also the lowering or lifting of the first end 102A of the second load unit, when the second end 104B (the free end) of the landing device is supported to the first (or second) load unit, as is depicted in Figures.
Depending on the application, the first portion 104A of the landing device 104 25 can be supported to the first end 102A of the second load unit 102, whereupon the second free portion 104B is configured to be introduced with the upper edge portion of the first load unit 101. Alternatively, the first portion 104A of the landing device 104 can be supported to the second end 101B of the first load unit 101, whereupon the second free portion 104B is configured to be 30 introduced with the lower edge portion of the second load unit 102.
Still in addition at least the second portion 104B of the landing device 104 can be configured to move inside the elongated slot 109, as is illustrated in Figures 2A-2G. Alternatively, at least the second portion 104B of the landing device 104 can also be configured to move outside the elongated slot 109, as 35 is illustrated in Figures 4A-4C. In addition it is to ne noted the second free portion 104B of the landing device 104 can be configured to move inside the
20185456 prh 04-04-2019 elongated slot 109 and to be introduced and supported with the protrusion member 108 for lowering and lifting the first end 102A of the second load unit.
Figures 3A-3C illustrate exemplary elongated channel 109 and protruding member 108 according to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, 5 where the elongated channel 109 has a longitudinal axis 110. The protruding member 108 and the elongated channel 109 in Figures 3A-3C are arranged so that the protruding member 108 is arranged in the second end 101B of the first load unit 101 and the elongated channel 109 is arranged in the first end 102A of the second load unit 102. However, they can also be arranged vice io versa, as is discussed elsewhere in this document.
The elongated channel 109 together with the protruding member 108 is configured to guide or limit the movement of the first end 102A of the second load unit 102 in at least one direction 110A, 110B being essentially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis 110 of the elongated channel 109, when 15 said landing device 104 moves, so lowers or lifts, the first end 102A of said second load unit 102. In this way the free movement of the second load unit 102 can be limited advantageously in the lateral and/or longitudinal directions 110A, 110B, whereupon also the distance between the first end 102A of the second load unit 102 and the second end 101B of the first load unit 101 can 20 be mechanically controlled and kept in a desired range during lowering and/or lifting the first end 102A of the second load unit 102. In addition, if the elongated channel 109 together with the protruding member 108 are configured properly (e.g. big or tight enough with no looseness) or the load units 101, 102 have at least two elongated channels 109 and protruding 25 member 108 (e.g. a one couple of elongated channel 109 and protruding member 108 in both lateral sides of the load units), the second load unit 102 can also be kept horizontally level during lowering and/or lifting the first end of the second load unit.
In addition the elongated channel 109 comprises advantageously a first 30 opening 109A in its first end (such as in the lower end) for receiving the protruding member 108 when the first end 102A of the second load unit 102 is introduced (both first and second directions) to the second end 101B of said first load unit 101 (both for connecting and disconnecting said load units). In addition the elongated channel 109 comprises advantageously a second 35 opening 109B in its second end (= upper end) for releasing the protruding member 108 when the first end 102A of the second load unit 102 is separated
20185456 prh 04-04-2019 or diverged from the second end 101B of the first load unit 101 (and vice versa when the load units are connected together). In addition the elongated channel 109 is configured to receive said protruding member 108 to travel between the first and second openings 109A, 109B of the elongated channel 5 109, when the first end 102A of the second load unit 102 is either lifter or lowered.
Figures 5A-5E illustrate a principle of an exemplary elongated channel 109 and protruding member 108 according to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, where the elongated channel 109 comprises additionally also a io catching member 111 next to the first and/or second opening 109A, 109B to catch the protruding member 108 when the first and second load units 101, 102 moves in relation to each other and thereby stop the relative movement in the first or second longitudinal directions 113, 114. In addition the catching member 111 is advantageously used to introduce the protruding member 108 15 to the elongated channel 109. It is to be noted that this is the case both when connecting or disconnecting the load units. The catching member 111 may be implemented e.g. by a lip or curved portion, which prevents the protruding member 108 to move over the catching member in the first or second longitudinal directions 113, 114 and guides the protruding member 108 to the 20 elongated channel 109.
Figure 6 illustrates another exemplary landing device 104 according to an advantageous embodiment of the invention. The landing device 104 can be implemented in different ways, as is discussed elsewhere in this document. Advantageously the landing device 104 comprises first and second portions 25 104A, 104B. According to a first example the first portion 104A of the landing device 104 is supported to the first end 102A of the second load unit 102, and the second portion 104B is introduced with the first load unit 101, advantageously to the upper edge portion of the first load unit 101. As is illustrated in Figures 2A-5E, the second portion 104B is a free portion and it 30 is introduced with the first load unit 101 when the protruding member 108 is received to the elongated channel 109, after which the first end 102A of the second load unit 102 can be either lifter or lowered via the movement of the second portion 104B of the landing device 104. According to a second example the first portion 104A of the landing device 104 is supported to the 35 second end 101B of the first load unit 101. In this case the second portion
104B of the landing device 104 is introduced with the second load unit 102, and advantageously to the lower edge portion of the second load unit 102, after which the first end 102A of the second load unit 102 can be either lifter or lowered via the movement of the second portion 104B of the landing device 104.
Another example of the landing device 104 is illustrated in Figure 6, where the second portion 104B of the landing device 104 comprises a toothing (like a cogwheel) and the first or second load unit 101, 102 comprises a corresponding toothing 116. The toothings (so the second portion 104B and the corresponding toothing 116) can be introduced with each other in a io manner that when the second portion 104B of the landing device 104 is actuated, so rotated in the question of Figure 6, the first end 102A of said second load unit 102 is moved in said direction 107 (either lowering or lifting) being in said angle to the longitudinal axis 105 of the guiding rail 106 via the actuation of said second portion 104B of the landing device 104B.
The invention has been explained above with reference to the aforementioned embodiments, and several advantages of the invention have been demonstrated. It is clear that the invention is not only restricted to these embodiments, but comprises all possible embodiments within the spirit and scope of the inventive thought and the following patent claims.
The features recited in dependent claims are mutually freely combinable unless otherwise explicitly stated.
