Abstract

The quaternary alkylamidobetaine esters are described by the formula (I) < IMAGE > in which the substituents have the following meanings: R<1>, R<5>, independently of one another, are (C12-C30) alkyl or (C12-C30) alkenyl R<2> is H or CH3 R<3>, R<4>, independently of one another, are (C1-C3) alkyl y is an integer from 0 to 10 and x is 1 or 2. These compounds are prepared by heating omega -dialkylamino(alkoxy)propylamides of fatty acids of the formula (II), if desired in the presence of an organic solvent (e.g. an alcohol), with chloroalkanoic esters of fatty alcohols of the formula (III) < IMAGE > These compounds are preferably used in liquid laundry softening agents present as a solution or dispersion in which they are distinguished, apart from the advantage of a soft handle of the laundry treated therewith, by particularly good solution and dispersion properties, thus making it possible to produce even concentrated formulations.
