Abstract

The invention relates to a method of removing radioactive material from water and organic waste material. In one embodiment, this is achieved by oxidizing the organic waste material in the presence of the contaminated water to oxidize the organic waste and vaporize at least a portion of the water, thereby producing discharge gases containing water vapor and non- condensable gases and an aqueous sludge containing concentrated radioactive material.
