Abstract

A concentrated aq. liquid fabric softening compsn. contg. at least 8 wt.% water-insoluble cationic fabric softener (A) is prepd. by (i) forming a molten mix of (A) and a nonionic material (B) having an HLB of not more than 10; (ii) adding the mixture to water at elevated temp.; (iii) mixing to form a dispersion of the mixture in water; and (iv) adding, after the formation of the dispersion, an electrolyte (C) contg. a source of Li, Na, K, Ca, Mg or Al ions. - Pref. (A) is a quaternary ammonium salt (10-18% of the compsn.) or an imidazolinium salt (12-26%) of the compsn.). (B) forms 1.6-4% of the compsn. and is (a) a 8-24C fatty acid, or ester thereof, with a 1-3C monohydric alcohol, (b) a 10-18C fatty alcohol, (c) lanolin or a deriv. thereof, or (d) a fatty acid ester of a 2-8C polyhydric alcohol. Wt. ratio (A):(B) is 5:1 to 20:1. - Step (i) takes place at less than 100 deg.C., step (ii) pref. at more than 60 deg.C. Water used in step (ii) may contain a dispersing agent, e.g. a water-soluble cationic or nonionic surfactant, having HLB more than 10, 0.2-1% of the compsn. (C) is calcium, magnesium or aluminium chloride, at e.g. 50-2000 ppm. The dispersion is pref. not cooled until after step (iv).
