Abstract
An apparatus for purification of waste water by anaerobic fermentation is composed of a closed vessel (1) equipped with means (2, 10) for feeding the waste water to be purified into the vessel, means (5, 6, 3) for discharging the purified water, the gas and the sludge from the vessel, means (4) for mixing the vessel contents and means (7) for separating the gas in the upper part of the vessel. In a departure from conventional reactors having complete mixing, the vessel (1) is subdivided by a filter (8) into two compartments located one above the other, which filter (8) contains a filling acting as support for the methane bacteria, having at least one filler and a sludge layer and suspended particle layer above it, the stirring means (4) being arranged beneath the filter, the means (2, 10) serving to feed the waste water to be purified opening beneath the filter (8) and the means (5, 6) for removing the purified water and the gas being connected to the vessel compartment located above the filter (8). In this manner, a cheap and simple apparatus for purifying waste water has been created in which no substantial mutual mixing of acid and methane bacteria can occur.
