Abstract

Method and apparatus for measuring the speed of circulation of a flow, stream or jet of molten material which emits radiation, particularly a jet of molten glass in free fall. The intensity of the radiation emitted from a limited portion of the flow of material is detected by means of two radiation detectors in two separate locations, which are separated from each other by a preset distance along the travel path of the flow of material. From the output signals of the two radiation detectors are distinguished or separated all the impulse- mode amplitude variations whose amplitude exceeds a preset magnitude. These impulse-mode amplitude variations have their origin in randomly appearing short, discrete, local variations of the intensity of the radiation emitted by the flow of material which are caused by instances of a lack of homogeneity which appear at random in the material (for example, in the form of air bubbles in a jet of molten glass). The interval of time between an impulse-mode amplitude variation in the output signal of the upstream detector, produced by an instance of a lack of homogeneity in the flow of material, and the appearance of an impulse-mode amplitude variation in the output signal of the downstream detector, produced by the same instance of lack of homogeneity of the flow of material, is measured and used as a measurement of the travel time of the flow of material between the detector locations in order to calculate the speed of circulation of the flow of material. It is also possible to determine the volume flow rate of the flow of material, also by measuring the diameter of the flow of material with the aid of a linear formation of photodiodes and by calculating the volume flow rate on the basis of the values of the speed of circulation and the diameter.
