Abstract

Dinitro-PCBT which is free from nitrosation agents is prepared to produce technical Trifluraline with a nitrosamines content of not more than 1 ppm for use as a herbicide through a process in which the dinitro-PCBT is treated with an aqueous bisulphite solution with has an SO2 concentration between 1% and 5% and a pH between 1 and 3 at a temperature between 50 and 100 degree C during a period of between 1 and 3 hours. The organic layer is then separated from the aqueous layer and acidity and the last traces of bisulphite solution are then removed from the organic layer using an aqueous alkaline solution.
