Abstract

Heat-exchanger 11, especially for preheating particulate glass batch or cullet, comprises plurality of tubes 17 through which the batch descends by gravity and around which ascends heating gas (e.g. waste gas from melting furnace 10, the gas being made turbulent by baffles 27. Valve 22 separates the heated batch into a major portion, which is fed via charger 24 to furnace 10, and a minor portion, which is mixed with fresh batch from chute 15 and recycled via elevator 32.
