Abstract

The method produces a recessed body of solid metal, particular steel or steel alloy, the recess being undercut with grooves running in the lengthwise direction. A blank is first produced with a recess to which the grooves are connected, and then shaped into the finished article, being for use as part of a constant- velocity universal joint. The diaer. of the recess in the blank at the middle is roughly equal to the maximum diameter of this recess in the finished article. The grooves in the blank are roughly of the same depth as those in the finished article, and are produced entirely by shaping without machining. While the open end of the blank is being reduced in diameter, a radial supporting outwards pressure is exerted at intervals on the recess wall round its lengthwise axis.
