Abstract

Partial decarbonation of water (esp. drinking water) is effected by pptn. and removal of CaCO3. The improvement comprises effecting decarbonation in the presence of crystn. nuclei under reduced pressure. The process is pref. carried out by filtering the water through a bed of granular solids, pref. comprising a CaCO3-contg. material (esp. high-purity limestone) in the form of trigonal crystals, pref. with a particle size of 0.8-2 mm. A vacuum of 30-100 (esp. 30-50) mmHg is applied below the bed, and a partial vacuum can also be applied above the bed. Compared with Ca(OH)2 treatment, the process is less expensive to operate and does not significantly reduce the Mg content of the water.
