Abstract

A tool for inserting the tubes (20) of tubular heat exchangers into the header plates (64) consists of a shaft (56) with a coned end (32). The shaft (56) has a central bore to receive a screwed rod (40) with a stepped tapered end (44, 46, 48). The tapered end (48) is used to guide the tube (20) into the hole in the header plate (64). When the tube (20) is in position it is expanded by screwing down the piston (42) by means of the rod (40). The piston compresses a stack of elastomeric O-rings (28) in the axial direction causing them to expand radially so that they in turn expand the tube (20).
