Abstract

El viento que se mueve sobre el agua transfiere su energía al agua porque la pone en movimiento. Este movimiento del agua es un movimiento en esencia armónico hasta el fondo del océano. En aguas profundas la distancia del recorrido de las partículas de agua hasta una profundidad igual a la mitad de la longitud de la ola (la longitud de la ola [L] es la distancia desde una cresta hasta la otra), es de 4% de la distancia de recorrido de las partículas en la superficie. Debido a que la energía está relacionada con el cuadrado del movimiento de las partículas de agua, más del 99,8% de la energía total se encuentra dentro de una profundidad desde la superficie, que es la mitad de la longitud de la ola. La cantidad de energía del viento almacenada en el agua en movimiento debajo de las olas, depende en forma principal de la velocidad del viento, del tiempo y de la distancia sobre la cual ha soplado el viento, porque la altura de las olas y la longitud de las olas se determinan con estas condiciones.
