Abstract

A semi-solid metal alloy charge is shaped under pressure in a die (1, 2, 3, 4). The metal alloy contains discrete degenerate dendritic primary solid particles, in a concentration from 30 to 90% by volume based upon the volume of the alloy, suspended homogeneously in a secondary liquid phase. The process is characterized by low pressures of 25 to 5000 psig and very rapid shaping and solidification times (maximum of 1 m). The process produces complex, close tolerance, high quality metal alloy parts, eg automotive wheels.
