Abstract

A centrifuge assembly incorporates a centrifuge bowl 1 having a filler piece 3 in which is formed an elongate channel 5. Removably disposed in the channel is a polyvinyl chloride tubular container 13 which conforms to the channel 5 and receives whole blood to be centrifuged so as to collect red cells, platelets and plasma. The channel 5 has two portions of which the first is wider than the second and is both curved and tapered to join the second at a transition portion of the channel. The second portion extends spirally outwards from the transition portion. Red cells are collected in the first channel portion and the platelets and plasma pass at high velocity through the transition portion for separation and collection in the second channel portion. The centrifuge bowl and filler piece may be made in one piece instead of separately.
