A method of rapidly and efficiently charging a battery comprising the operations of: (a) supplying electrical power to the battery in order to charge it, (b) determining at least periodically the value of a battery characteristic that varies with the state battery charging; (c) comparing the successive values of said characteristic to determine the occurrence of at least one inflection point of the variation of said characteristic with respect to time and (d) controlling the supply of energy to the battery based on said occurrence.
