Abstract

A battery charger comprises a transformer (1) having a primary winding (1a) connected to an A.C. power supply and a secondary winding (1b) to be connected to the battery terminals. Arranged between one end of the secondary winding and one output terminal are a pair of antiparallel connected rectifiers (2, 5) which are each connected to a respective contact (3, 6). Parallel connected between the output terminals (4, 8) are the coils (10, 11) of two relays controlling the respective contact (3, 6) and in series with the coils are arranged respective back to back connected rectifiers (12, 13) to cause energization of that relay the contact whereof allows passage of charging current through the rectifier serially connected thereto. Hence the charger supplies charging current to the battery irrespectively of the polarity of the battery terminals connected to the output terminals (4, 8). A voltage sensitive relay (9) allows 6 volt or 12 volt batteries to be charged.
