Abstract
An improved method of expanding tobacco, comprising the operations of (1) impregnating tobacco with liquid carbon dioxide under conditions such that substantially all of the liquid carbon dioxide is kept in liquid form to impregnate the tobacco with liquid carbon dioxide is maintained in liquid form to impregnate tobacco with liquid carbon dioxide, (2) subject the tobacco impregnated with liquid carbon dioxide to conditions such that the liquid carbon dioxide is converted into solid carbon dioxide, and (3) then subject the tobacco containing solid carbon dioxide at conditions in which the solid carbon dioxide vaporizes causing tobacco expansion, wherein the improvement comprises: (I) using as tobacco used in the operation (1) a tobacco that has a ve content of about 17 to about 30%, (II) performing the first operation under pressure in the range of about 17.5 kg/cm2 absolute at about 36.7 kg/cm2 absolute, and (III) performing the third operation in such a way that the moisture content of the expanded tobacco obtained in the third operation does not exceed about 6%.
