A process for the preparation of a stabilized solution of a flocculating agent, comprising selecting an aqueous solution of a cationic flocculating agent that is substantially free of inorganic solids in suspension, adding to said selected solution an amount of water that is sufficient to produce a aqueous solution containing less than 10 grams per liter of said flocculating agent, selecting a free acid that is substantially free of inorganic solids in suspension and mixing an amount of the free acid with the aqueous solution of the flocculating agent in sufficient quantity to change the ph of the the aqueous solution of the flocculating agent at a value in the range of 1 to 5.5 and storing the acidified aqueous solution of the flocculating agent before use.
