Abstract
A windscreen wiper motor 10 with a parking switch 14 is controlled by a control switch 20 to operate in a first normal mode via a first current supply circuit 11, 21, 13 and a second intermittent mode via a switching element 33, 34 independent of the switch 21 in a second current supply circuit 31, 30, the motor always being parked through the second current supply circuit 30 regardless of the mode of operation, so that the parking position of the wipers is independent of the mode of operation. To park the wipers, switch 20 is moved to position O from continuous-operation position II or III or intermittent-operation position I, whereby second supply circuit 30 energises the motor (via 22, 32, 36, 38) until parking contacts 15, 16 close to cause 33, 34 to switch off and complete a motor short-circuit braking path (via 15, 16, 37, 38, 32, 22, 11). Such operation occurs on switch movement from or through position I. Alternatively energisation of circuit 30 in position O may be employed using the motor back EMF as a control signal, Figures 2 to 4 (not shown), the Figure 4 modification ensuring that (1) operation is reliable at low values of back EMF and (2) the parking position is unaltered when ignition switch (92) is opened, since the battery is connected directly to circuit 30 and through switch (92) to switch 20.
