Abstract

Phospholipid compositions are obtained from ground. homogenised animal organs by a four stage process. in the first stage the organs are soaked in acetone to sever bonds between phospholipids and other substances present in the organ. In the second stage, the organs are refluxed in acetone to remove extraneous matter such as proteins and amino acids. In the third stage, the phospholipids are extracted with ethanol. The acetone solutions, which may contain small amounts of entrained phospholipids, and the ethanol solution are all evaporated to dryness and the residues are taken up in diethyl ether. In the fourth stage the phospholipids are precipitated by addition of acetone. The phospholipid compositions obtained are of sufficient purity for pharmaceutical use.
