Abstract

Biodegradable organic material is treated by passing a liq. medium (esp. an aq. medium) contg. the biodegradable material upwards through a vertical treatment chamber with an aspect ratio of is not 3:1, pref. 7:1 5:1 and esp. 10-12:1, while a mainly flake shaped microorganism which is capab le of at least partially degrading the organic matl. is grown in the chamber. An oxygen-contg. gas is passed into the chamber to provide the conditions necessary for the growth of the organism, and a mixt. of treated medium, excess microorganism and gas is recovered from a common outlet at the top of the chamber. Process is an effective means of treating dilute effluents e.g. from the food industrya nd avoids the use of expensive and space-consuming activated settling tanks, biological filters and lagoons. The degraded material can be pressed into biomasses useful e.g. as food supplements for animals and man, as fertilisers and soil improvement agents.
