Abstract

1438041 Anaerobic purification of water P S DELIN 26 Nov 1973 [27 Nov 1972 12 Jan 1973] 54700/73 Heading C1C A process for purifying polluted water containing nutrient salts, heavy metals and/or poisonous materials as contaminants comprises: (a) producing an anaerobic zone and forming hydrogen sulphide in the water by stimulating the growth of the algae and/or microorganisms resident in the water, (b) continuing the growth for a time sufficient to cause the contaminants to form a separate phase in the water by precipitation as sulphides or by absorption and/or assimilation of the algae and/or microorganisms with subsequent deposition with the algae and/or microorganisms and (c) eventually separating the contaminant phase from the water phase. The contaminants must be present in the anaerobic zone for at least 0À3 days, and preferably more than 3 days.
