Abstract

Process for the production of a substitute for natural gas, characterized in that it comprises the steps of: (a) providing an oil having an initial boiling point of not less than about 200º c; (b) subjecting at least part of the oil to non-catalytic hydrogenation and recovering a product gas therefrom; (c) separating hydrogen from the product gas obtained in step (b); (d) recycling hydrogen recovered in step (c) for reuse in step (b); (e) forming a substitute for natural gas from the gas product of step (b); y (f) producing gas containing hydrogen to meet the needs of the hydrogenation step (b).
