Abstract
Pyrogallol derivs. of formula (I) are prepd. In the formula R1-3 are each H, 1-6C alkyl each X is Cl or Br). Pref. cpd. (II) is a tetra-Cl deriv. and hydrolysis is effected with a catalyst e.g. a base, an anion or a cation exchange resin in neutralised form but esp. with NaAc mono Na citrate, phthalate or adipate. A pH of 2.8-6, temp. of 0-250 degrees C, esp. 0-120 degrees C and press. of 0.1-15 atmos. is pref. used. The derivs are useful as photographic developers, as dyes for leather and wool, in analysing leaving metals, and as an intermediate for prodn. of the insecticide 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-benzodioxol-4-yl methyl carbamate. Prod. is obtd. in very high yield and purity.
