Procedure for obtaining aminoplast resins, hardenable under heat, by precondensation of an aminoplast former with formaldehyde, an alkanol and, if appropriate, modifying agents and addition of a latent hardener, characterized in that the precondensate is added, as latent hardener, 0.01 to 2% by weight, based on the solid resin, of an alkyl polyphosphate, obtained by reaction of phosphorous pentoxide with n moles/mol P2O5 from a dialkyl ether and/or m mol/mol P2O5 of an alkanol at temperatures between 30 and 120ºC, the sum of n + m being at least 0.5 and the alkyl chain length of the alkyl ether and/or alkanol being 1 to 3 carbon atoms and the reaction being continued until a sample of the reaction product is completely soluble under heat in a lower alkanol or in a lower aliphatic chlorinated hydrocarbon.
