Abstract

A method of catalyzing a substrate for the non-electrolytic deposition of a metal, which comprises contacting said substrate for a sufficient time with a catalyst composition, said composition comprising the product resulting from the mixing of (1) a salt of a catalytic metal selected from the group consisting of the gold, silver and platinum family metals salts, (2) the addition product formed from a stannous salt in an amount such that the concentration of the stannous ions is in excess molar relative to the concentration of the catalytic metal ions, an acid in an amount sufficient to provide a pH of less than about 3.5 and urea in an amount such that the molar ratio of urea to acid exceeds 1 to 10, and (3) a halide salt in an amount such that the total concentration of halide ions at a pH below the catalyst precipitation point is at least 0.2 mol per liter in excess with respect to the concentration of halide ions provided by all the other components and at a pH equal to or greater than that of the precipitation point is at least sufficient to avoid the formation of a precipitate.
