Abstract

A method of stabilizing and retarding the precipitation point of a catalyst to catalyze a substrate before the non-electrolytic deposition of a metal, said catalyst comprising the product of the mixture of (1) catalytic metal ions, (2) stannous ions in a molar excess amount over said catalytic metal ions, and (3) hydrogen ions in sufficient quantity to provide a formulation having a pH less than about 3.5, said process comprising adding to said formulation foreign halide ions, the concentration of such foreign halide ions, at a pH below the normal precipitation point of the catalyst, to make the total halide ion concentration at least 0.2 mol per liter in excess of the halide ion concentration provided by all other components of the catalyst, and at a pH equal to or greater than the normal precipitation point, being at least sufficient entity to avoid the formation of a precipitate.
