Improved process of hydrogenating the exocyclic methylene group of a 6-deoxy-6-demotyl-6-methylenthothracycline or an acid addition salt thereof, characterized by carrying out the hydrogenation at a temperature of from about 20º to about 100ºC, at a pressure of from about 1 to about 100 atmospheres, under near neutral conditions or in the weakly acidic tetracycline acid addition salt in the presence of a catalytic amount of a compound of the formula Rh (OCOR) 2 (p [C6H5] 3) wherein R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, chloromethyl, dichloromethyl, trichloromethyl, fluomethyl, difluomethyl, trifluomethyl, phenyl, chlorophenyl, tolyl, and anisyl, whereby the hydrogenation of the group of exocyclic methylene advances with a stereaselectivity that favors the alpha-isomer over the beta-isomer.
