A method of controlling to a maximum value the skidding of the wheels in an electric locomotive having at least one series traction motor that drives a traction wheel and means for supplying electric power to the motor, characterized in that it comprises the operations of: determining the characteristics of e/n as a function of the motor current intensity of said motor, where e is the back electromotive force: and n being the motor speed in rpm; provide an electrical speed signal representing the speed of the locomotive, which is proportional to n for a non-skid condition; provide a current signal proportional to the motor current; electrically calculating the motor voltage required to drive said motor and its associated wheel with a desired maximum percentage of wheel slip utilizing said e/n characteristics, said speed signal and said current signal; and controlling the maximum voltage supplied to the engine to the value of the calculated tension to thus limit the actual wheel slippage to the value of the maximum desired percentage of wheel slippage.
