A method for the preparation of an ether by reaction of (i) a water-soluble alcohol as the first reactant and (ii) an olefin or water-insoluble alcohol as the second reactant, in the presence of a solid resin as an etherification catalyst, thus forming a reaction mixture containing the first unreacted reactant and the ether product consisting of radicals from the first reactant and the second reactant; whose method is characterized in that the reaction is carried out in an inert hydrocarbon solvent with 3 or 4 carbon atoms and the reaction mixture is contacted with an aqueous extractant in the presence of the inert hydrocarbon, thus forming (i) an extract aqueous containing the first reactant and (ii) a raffinate containing the inert hydrocarbon and the ether product and recovering the raffinate.
