Abstract

Procedure for the treatment of liquids that carry biologically degradable material in solution and/or suspension, characterized in that an oxygen-containing gas is introduced into said liquid and a culture of microorganisms is maintained in it, such conditions being that for a period at least part of said liquid is subjected to a low tension of dissolved oxygen and/or at least part of said liquid is subjected to a high tension of dissolved oxygen, with which, during the process, the ratio of carbon dioxide increases to cellular material produced by the culture, the period of time during which any part of the liquid is subjected to a low or high tension of dissolved oxygen, being sufficiently short there is also a period during which that part of the liquid is subjected to a tension of dissolved oxygen intermediate between a low and high tension of dissolved oxygen, so that the aforementioned microorganisms are n affected in such a way that their function in the treatment process is substantially impaired.
