Abstract

A process for preparing L-phenylalanine, characterized by: a) aerobically propagating a phenylalanine ammonia-lyase-producing microorganism in an aqueous nutrient medium, until considerable amounts of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase are obtained; b) contacting the cells of the phenylalanine ammonia lyase-producing microorganism of step (a) with ammonium ions and with trans-cinnamate ions, in a molar ratio of 2: 1, at least, in a mixture of reaction, the concentration of the cinnamate ions being 0.5 to 10% w/v, with respect to the reaction mixture, allowing the reaction to proceed at a temperature of 30 to 40ºC. and at a pH of 8.0 to 10.5, until materially the conversion to L-phenylalanine is complete and c) separating and recovering L-phenylalanine from the reaction mixture.
