Abstract
Novel thiophosphoric esters (thiophosphates) of the formula: < IMAGE > in which R1 and R3, which are identical or different, are chlorine or bromine, and R2 is methyl or ethyl, have low toxicity to humans, animals and fish, no phytotoxicity to crop plants, an excellent fungicidal action in agriculture and horticulture against harmful, epidemic fungi which live in the soil, and a broad range of application for preventing mass infestation of the soil by fungi, whereby they promote the growth of crop plants. They are prepared by reacting a 2,4,6-trisubstituted phenol derivative of the formula: < IMAGE > in which M is hydrogen, an alkali metal or an ammonium group, (a) with O,O-dimethylthiophosphoryl chloride or (b) with thiophosphoryl chloride in the presence of an acid-binding agent, and reacting the resultant 2,4,6-trisubstituted phenylthiophosphoryl chloride with an alkali metal methoxide or, in the presence of an acid-binding agent, with methanol. A fungicide for treating the soil contains an inert carrier and as active component a fungicidally effective amount of a thiophosphoric ester of the formula I.
