A method of producing 2-chloropropionic acid derivatives of the formula: **(See formula)** wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom, a lower alcohol group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms, a halogen atom, a hydroxyl group, a lower alkoxy group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or a trifluoromethyl group ; R2 or R3 are the same or different and each represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alcohol group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms; Y represents an alcohol ethylene group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, an alcohol-ethylene group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, an alcohol ethylenedioxy group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms; Z represents a carboxyl group or a group convertible into a carboxyl group; n is 1 or 2 or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, which comprises reacting a compound of the formula: **(See formula)** wherein R1, Y and n have the same meanings as given above, with a compound of the general formula: R2CH = CR3-Z where R2, R3 and Z have the same meanings as given above.
