Abstract

A resinous binder for varnish substantially free from oxide gps. is prepd. by reacting a Mannich base derived from a condensed phenol (I), a secondary amine (II) and a formaldehyde source, with an epoxide resin contg. 0.6-1.3 epoxide gps. per mol. (I) (I) is pref. of formula (I) (where OH is o or p. to X and X = 1-3C alkylene, SO2, SO or O). (II) comprises at least one sec. amine contg. is not 1 OH gp. with (out) other sec. or prim. amines. For cathodic electro dip-coating of metals, esp. electrical conductors. The resin is easy to manufacture and stable in store. The varnish ionised by acidification is highly bath-stable. Coatings after heat-hardening adhere strongly to substrates and are tough, elastic and scratch resistant.
