Abstract

A method of improving the characteristics of dimensional stability, wrinkle resistance, uniform drying, and full shape retention of a fabric containing cellulosic fibers, comprising: (a) applying to the fabric an aqueous solution of an anti-wrinkle agent soluble in water containing reactive N-methylol groups; (b) heating the impregnated fabric containing the reactive water-soluble anti-wrinkle agent containing reactive N-methylol groups in a non-reactive steam atmosphere containing a catalyst selected from the group consisting of formic acid and acetic acid to a temperature comprised between more than 80ºC and up to about 160ºC, for a time ranging from about 10 seconds to 2 hours until the cellulose fibers effectively crosslink; and (c) heating the crosslinked fabric to a temperature above about 100ºC to remove water vapor, residual catalyst, and unfixed anti-crease agent, and cure the crosslinked fabric.
