A procedure for the preparation of cephalosporin compounds of the formula: **(See formula)** where R is phenyl or a 5-membered ring containing 1 or 2 heteroatoms, the latter being sulfur, oxygen or nitrogen; A is hydrogen, lower alkanoyl oxy, carbamoyloxy, thiocarbamoyloxy, N-lower alkyl carbamoyloxy, N-lower alkyl thiocarbamoyloxy, N, N-dialkyl lower carbamoyloxy, N, N-dialkyl lower thiocarbamoyloxy, pyridinium, alkyl pyridinium, halopyridinium or aminopyridinium; and M is sodium, potassium or hydrogen; whose procedure consists of a) heating a compound of formula: **(See formula)** where R, M and A are those defined above, at a temperature between 60 and 100ºC or b) reacting a compound of formula: **(See formula)** where R, M and A are as defined above, with 2-nitroso-2-methylpropane, followed by heating at 80-90ºC for 1 or 2 hours in hydroquinone; or c) reducing a compound of formula: **(See formula)** where R, M and A are as defined above, with zinc powder in an aqueous solution of acetic acid at room temperature; or d) reacting a compound of formula: **(See formula)** where R, A or M are as defined above, with hydroquinone and then with sodium hydride and then heating.
