A method of inflating a passive fastening device by ignition of a pyrotechnic composition inside the device, wherein the pyrotechnic composition employed is a mixture of an alkali metal azide and a metal halide of the formula XnM, where M is selected from among the tin, aluminum, iron, titanium, zinc, strontium, barium, cobalt, nickel, manganese and molybdenum cations, X is selected from chloride, bromide and iodide, and n is the valence of the cation, the halide being present in a ratio at least stoichiometrically equivalent to the alkali metal of the azide.
