A process for the production of 1-alkyl (or alkenyl) 6,7-oxocinolin-3-carbonitriles and their intermediates of the following formula: ** (see formula) ** Where r is a member of the group consisting of methyl, ethyl, N-propyl, isopropyl, N-butyl, β -hiroxyethyl and allyl, which process consists of: (a) catalytically reducing 2'-nitro-4'-5'-methylenedioxy-acetophenone to 2'-amino-4', 5'-methylenedioxyacetophenone; (b) diazotizing the 2-amino-4'5'-methylenedioxyacetophenone with nitrous acid and cyclizing to form 6,7-methylenedioxyquinolin-4-ol; (c) treating with bromine 6,7-methylenedioxycinolin-4-ol to produce 3-bromo-6,7-methylenedioxyquinolin-4-ol; (d) treating cuprous cyanide with 3-bromo-6,7-methylenedioxyquinolin-4-ol to form 6,7-methylenedioxyquinolin-4-ol-3-carbonitrile; y (e) alkylating 6,7-methylenedioxyquinolin-4-ol-3-carbonitrile with alkyl, alkenyl or β-hydroxyethyl bromide, chloride, iodide or sulfate to form the carbonitrile which corresponds to the above formula.
