Procedure for obtaining a pyrogen-free plasma substitute, characterized in that it comprises treating hydroxyethyl starch that has a degree of substitution of 0.5-0.6, preferably 0.55, and an intrinsic viscosity of 0, 28-0.30, with an acid to decrease molecular weight; adjust the hydroxyethyl starch to have the degree of substitution of 0.55 and an intrinsic viscosity of 0.08 - 0.14; add depyrogenating reagent, such as Raney nickel, if necessary to obtain an isotonic aqueous solution containing 6% hydroxyethyl starch and various salts, preferably adding sodium chloride (0.5%), potassium chloride (0.03%), calcium chloride dihydrate (0.02%), sodium lactate (0.244%) and glucose (1%) in% w/v, to form a 6% solution of hydroxyethyl starch; and finally adjust the pH of the obtained isotonic aqueous solution to 6.2 ± 0.5.
