Abstract

Procedure for modifying cellulosic fibers, which comprises treating the fibers which are free of keratinous material, in any desired sequence or simultaneously, with 0.1 to 5% by weight, calculated on the weight of fibrous cellulosic material, (1) of an ester having an average molecular weight of 400 to 10,000 and containing, on average, at least two mercaptan groups per molecule and is a reaction product of (a) a compound containing at least two carboxylic acid groups, (b) a compound containing at least two alcoholic hydroxyl groups and optionally (c) a compound containing not more than one carboxylic acid group or alcoholic hydroxyl group, having at least one of (a), (b) and (c) one or more mercaptan lumps, and (2) an aminoplast that is free of ethylenic unsaturation, and curing the ester and aminoplast in the fibers in the presence of curing catalysts at a temperature of 80º to 200ºC, for 30 seconds to 10 minutes.
