A process for the preparation of biaxially oriented film of poly (2,6-ethylene naphthalate) having a low thermal contraction, comprising subjecting a biaxially oriented film, consisting essentially of poly (2,6-ethylene naphthalate) an intrinsic viscosity of not less than 0.35 in which at least 90 mol% of the structural units are units of poly (2,6-ethylene naphthalate), to the heat treatment of the first stage at a temperature higher than 150ºC but below 250º c, under conditions such that they do not allow free shrinkage of the film, and then subject the film to the heat treatment of the second stage at a temperature not lower than 250º c, but lower than the melting point of the poly (2,6 ethylene naphthalate).
