A process for producing a lubricating oil base material having a relatively high viscosity index (IV), comprising subjecting a low IV filler to hydrocracking in a first reaction zone; separating from the resulting effluent product a fraction containing relatively low IV components and a fraction containing relatively high IV components; hydrocracking said fraction containing relatively low IV components in a second reaction zone; separating a third fraction having a relatively high IV from the resulting product effluent, and recovering a lubricating oil base material comprising said relatively high IV fractions.
