Abstract
An explosive slurry comprising a solution of an oxidiser and suspended solid particles is prepared by feeding solid particles and liquid at controlled speeds to a mixer, withdrawing slurry from the mixer, pumping it to a delivery point, e.g. a borehole, and recycling part of the slurry through the slurry pump in order to control the density and other physical properties of the slurry. The liquid fed to the mixer may be a heated aqueous solution of ammonium nitrate and sodium nitrate containing guar gum as a delayed action thickener. The finely divided solid materials may be, for example, further oxidiser and aluminium powder and other fuels or sensitisers. Apparatus is described, Figures 1-8 (not shown) in which a petrol motor 25 drives, through a single main drive, a pump 119 for the aqueous solution, augers 169, 180 for feeding the solid materials at separately controllable rates, the stirrer in mixer 99, and slurry pump 93. The mixer and the slurry pump are interconnected so that they always work together. The composition of the explosive and the degree of aeration may be varied during pumping into a borehole. An air compressor is also provided to operate pneumatic controls and to pressurise a water tank for auxiliary liquid supply and cleaning. The apparatus may be mounted on a vehicle or may be removed and used in a mine tunnel. In an alternative arrangement, Figure 9 (not shown), the drive means and control are fluid operated by a master pump system.
