Abstract

A copolyamide is formed by mixing molten polyamides in the presence of an acidic or basic compound. There may be 0.2-1% of the compound based on weight of polyamide. The compound may be an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic mono- or di-carboxylic acid, e.g. acetic, stearic, or sebacic acid, or a salt thereof, e.g. Mg stearate. The melt-mixing may be performed continuously or discontinuously, e.g. in an extruder. In Example 2, granules of nylons 66, 12, and 6 are melted with 0.5% sebacic acid. Example 1 is a contrasting example in which the sebacic acid is omitted.
