Abstract
Catalysts for use in the epoxidation of olefinic compounds by treatment with organic hydroperoxides comprise zirconium in chemical combination with silica and/or an inorganic silicate. Preferably the catalyst has a specific surface area of at least 1m2/g. In addition to the zirconium compound there may be present in the catalyst a promoter, e.g. a compound of magnesium, calcium, strontium or barium. There may also be present in the catalyst up to 10% by weight of an oxide or hydroxide of boron, tin niobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, rhenium, uranium, bismuth or a rare earth metal (atomic number 57-71). For comparative purposes examples are given of the use as catalyst of zirconium on a number on non-siliceous supports, metals other than zirconium on silica and various metallic compounds without siliceous compounds.
